About The Project

In May 2020, Super Cyclonic Storm Amphan caused unprecedented devastation in eastern India and Bangladesh. The Sundarbans region, known for its dense mangrove forests and rich biodiversity, was particularly hard-hit, suffering immense damages to infrastructure, homes, and livelihoods. In response to this disaster, Tata Steel Foundation (TSF), the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) arm of Tata Steel, played a pivotal role in aiding the affected communities.

TSF, established in 1983, has been at the forefront of sustainable community development, particularly in areas affected by natural disasters. For the Amphan relief efforts, TSF extended substantial support, both immediate and in the midterm, to rehabilitate the cyclone-affected areas in West Bengal during the financial year 2020-21. This included a significant financial contribution from the state government and additional funds directed towards grassroots non-profit entities, focusing on comprehensive relief work impacting various sectors such as agriculture, housing, and education.

The foundation's intervention in five blocks of the South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal was crucial in restoring livelihoods, reconstructing homes, and ensuring educational continuity for students. TSF's initiatives benefited farmers, women in livestock rearing, survivors of human trafficking, and school students, demonstrating a diverse and inclusive approach to disaster relief and rehabilitation.

To assess the impact and efficacy of these efforts, NuSocia, an impact advisory firm, was commissioned to conduct an in-depth evaluation. Their research provided valuable insights into the program's reach and effectiveness. NuSocia's findings highlighted the significant impact of TSF's interventions in alleviating the hardships faced by the affected communities. However, it also pointed out the need for continued and multifaceted interventions in the region, known for its vulnerability to extreme climate conditions and other socioeconomic challenges.

In line with these findings and recommendations, a professional company was appointed to further the objectives through technical writing and designing, ensuring that the initiatives are well-documented, strategically planned, and effectively communicated. This step aimed to enhance the scope and sustainability of the relief efforts, ensuring a lasting positive impact on the communities in the Sundarbans region.
