About The Project

The Forbes Foundation, in a strategic alliance with the Know How Foundation, spearheaded the Integrated Solid Waste Management (ISWM) initiative in Sawardari village, Pune. This project was meticulously aligned with the 2015 SWM Rules of India, aiming to overhaul the village's solid waste management infrastructure. The core objective centered around enhancing the efficiency of waste segregation, collection, and management processes, thereby establishing a sustainable and scalable waste management model in a peri-urban context.

Financial Outlay and Community Integration

The financial outlay for this initiative amounted to ₹ 94,05,380, with a significant return on investment evidenced by compost sales generating ₹ 76,86,786. This economic framework demonstrated the project's fiscal sustainability and viability. The implementation strategy was deeply rooted in community engagement. It involved comprehensive orientation sessions with the local governing body, the Gram Panchayat, and interactive corner meetings with villagers. These sessions were instrumental in fostering community buy-in, ensuring effective beneficiary selection, and facilitating the distribution and utilization of compost planters at the household level.

Operational Milestones and Environmental Impact

The project marked several operational milestones, including the establishment of a decentralized waste collection system and the development of dedicated sites for organic waste composting. This led to the systematic management of 1.327 metric tons of waste daily and the processing of 1,491.412 metric tonnes of wet waste. A notable environmental achievement was the significant reduction in carbon emissions, with the project contributing to an avoidance of 621.422 metric tons of CO2 emissions, aligning with global sustainability targets.

Impact Assessment and Project Documentation

The project's impact was rigorously evaluated by NuSocia, a specialist in impact assessment. This evaluation provided a comprehensive analysis of the project's effectiveness in environmental management, community engagement, and socio-economic upliftment. To encapsulate and disseminate the project's success, a professional copywriting and design firm was commissioned. Their mandate was to create an extensive narrative and visual representation of the project, capturing its strategic implementation, operational challenges, and impactful outcomes.
